00:00:00.380 --> 00:00:04.620
You know how some Bible verses feel like they've just always been around?

00:00:05.700 --> 00:00:07.820
You don't remember the first time you heard them?

00:00:08.220 --> 00:00:15.120
They're just there, printed on mugs, on wall art, shared online with soft music and calming

00:00:15.380 --> 00:00:15.600
backgrounds.

00:00:16.640 --> 00:00:21.740
And one of the most familiar verses is this one, Be still and know that I am God.

00:00:22.560 --> 00:00:25.320
Now, most of us hear that verse as a whisper, don't we?

00:00:25.640 --> 00:00:28.340
Like God leaning in and saying, Hey, slow down.

00:00:29.060 --> 00:00:29.600
Take a breath.

00:00:30.400 --> 00:00:36.320
calm your heart. And listen, there is comfort in that. But when I really looked at this verse

00:00:36.620 --> 00:00:42.820
and did some digging and actually looked at it in context, I realized something. God isn't

00:00:42.940 --> 00:00:50.180
whispering here. He's speaking over noise, over chaos, over a world that is anything but calm.

00:00:51.220 --> 00:00:54.760
And that's why this verse belongs on Verses We Missed.

00:01:08.400 --> 00:01:13.340
Welcome to Verses We Missed. I'm your host, Steve Webb, your OG Godcaster.

00:01:14.260 --> 00:01:18.480
Every week, we take time to slow down and listen carefully to Scripture,

00:01:18.900 --> 00:01:26.180
especially the verses we tend to quote quickly or memorize early or carry with us without ever

00:01:26.460 --> 00:01:32.920
really stopping to ask what they meant when God first spoke them. This is your midweek breath of

00:01:33.080 --> 00:01:38.320
Scripture and grace. And today we're turning to a verse that many of us know by heart,

00:01:38.950 --> 00:01:45.519
a verse that shows up in moments of anxiety, exhaustion, and uncertainty. A verse that's

00:01:45.540 --> 00:01:51.980
often offered as comfort and received as a whisper, be still and know that I am God.

00:01:53.200 --> 00:02:00.720
But Psalm 4610 wasn't spoken into quiet. It was spoken into chaos. And when we hear it in context,

00:02:01.480 --> 00:02:07.020
we discover that this verse isn't just about calming our hearts. It's about recognizing who

00:02:07.300 --> 00:02:13.819
truly reigns when everything else feels like it's shaking. Let's listen again and hear what we may

00:02:13.840 --> 00:02:18.980
have missed. Let me read the whole verse, just as it appears in the English Standard Version.

00:02:20.200 --> 00:02:27.380
Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.

00:02:28.340 --> 00:02:34.700
Now, that last line matters. Actually, those last two lines matter a lot, because they tell us who

00:02:34.920 --> 00:02:43.079
God is talking to and why He's saying this at all. To really hear Psalm 46.10, we have to step back

00:02:43.120 --> 00:02:49.760
and listen to the whole psalm. Psalm 46 doesn't begin in a quiet prayer room. It begins with

00:02:49.820 --> 00:02:55.540
upheaval. The psalmist talks about the earth giving way, mountains falling into the sea,

00:02:56.120 --> 00:03:02.980
waters roaring, the ground shaking. That's not poetic calm. That's disaster imagery.

00:03:03.840 --> 00:03:09.980
And then the focus shifts from nature falling apart to nations falling apart.

00:03:11.080 --> 00:03:17.620
The psalm says, the nations rage, kingdoms totter, everything feels unstable.

00:03:19.040 --> 00:03:23.760
If Psalm 46 were written today, we might say, nothing feels solid anymore.

00:03:24.960 --> 00:03:27.680
And that is the moment when verse 10 happens.

00:03:28.800 --> 00:03:32.160
Up to this point, the psalmist has been talking about God.

00:03:33.120 --> 00:03:36.060
But in verse 10, God speaks for himself.

00:03:36.900 --> 00:03:37.700
And that's important.

00:03:38.060 --> 00:03:41.040
This isn't someone reminding themselves to calm down.

00:03:41.820 --> 00:03:45.820
This is God stepping into the middle of the chaos and saying something directly.

00:03:46.700 --> 00:03:51.460
And when He says, Be still, we need to ask, Who is He talking to?

00:03:52.260 --> 00:03:57.200
Because when He finishes the sentence, He says, I will be exalted among the nations.

00:03:57.720 --> 00:03:59.500
I will be exalted in the earth.

00:04:00.400 --> 00:04:01.480
Well, that tells us the audience.

00:04:02.380 --> 00:04:05.960
God is speaking to the nations, to the raging powers,

00:04:06.560 --> 00:04:12.220
to the kingdoms that think they're in control, which changes how we hear the words,

00:04:12.840 --> 00:04:20.540
be still. When we hear be still, we usually think, slow down, relax, clear your mind.

00:04:21.380 --> 00:04:30.280
But the word behind be still means something closer to stop, cease, let go, stand down.

00:04:30.720 --> 00:04:34.120
This isn't God saying, hey everyone, take a deep breath.

00:04:34.820 --> 00:04:37.240
This is God saying, that's enough.

00:04:38.520 --> 00:04:39.280
Enough striving.

00:04:40.080 --> 00:04:40.840
Enough raging.

00:04:41.840 --> 00:04:43.860
Enough pretending that you're in charge.

00:04:44.840 --> 00:04:47.640
It's stop and recognize who I am.

00:04:48.420 --> 00:04:49.160
And that's the key.

00:04:50.020 --> 00:04:51.760
Know that I am God.

00:04:52.440 --> 00:04:54.160
This isn't emotional knowledge.

00:04:54.540 --> 00:04:55.440
It's acknowledgement.

00:04:56.380 --> 00:04:58.180
It's recognizing reality.

00:04:59.380 --> 00:05:02.080
God isn't asking the nations to feel something.

00:05:02.900 --> 00:05:05.560
He's commanding them to accept the truth.

00:05:06.460 --> 00:05:07.480
I am God.

00:05:07.940 --> 00:05:08.760
You are not.

00:05:09.380 --> 00:05:11.580
History is not slipping through my fingers.

00:05:12.180 --> 00:05:14.320
The world is not spinning out of control.

00:05:15.020 --> 00:05:15.920
I reign.

00:05:17.860 --> 00:05:21.240
Then God makes two statements that are absolutely certain.

00:05:22.060 --> 00:05:25.020
He says, I will be exalted among the nations.

00:05:25.500 --> 00:05:27.380
I will be exalted in the earth.

00:05:28.120 --> 00:05:29.200
Not, I hope.

00:05:29.800 --> 00:05:31.700
Not, I'm working toward it.

00:05:32.520 --> 00:05:33.280
I will.

00:05:34.280 --> 00:05:38.760
Now, whether through repentance or resistance, through humility or collapse,

00:05:39.280 --> 00:05:41.080
God's glory is not optional.

00:05:41.760 --> 00:05:42.540
That's not a threat.

00:05:43.120 --> 00:05:43.760
It's a fact.

00:05:45.340 --> 00:05:47.100
Now, here's the part that really struck me.

00:05:48.140 --> 00:05:54.480
Even though Psalm 4610 is spoken to the nations, it becomes comfort for God's people.

00:05:55.400 --> 00:06:01.980
Because if God can tell the nations to stand down, if He can command chaos to stop, if

00:06:01.980 --> 00:06:07.840
He can guarantee His exaltation in all the earth, then He can be trusted with your life,

00:06:08.620 --> 00:06:14.500
with your fears, with the things that feel out of control, with the situations you can't

00:06:14.620 --> 00:06:14.760
fix.

00:06:16.020 --> 00:06:18.060
This verse isn't telling you to calm yourself.

00:06:18.720 --> 00:06:21.340
It's telling you why you don't have to.

00:06:23.140 --> 00:06:25.080
Biblical stillness isn't passivity.

00:06:26.120 --> 00:06:30.980
It's surrender. It's laying down the illusion that everything depends on you.

00:06:32.140 --> 00:06:39.700
It's saying, God, you are God, and I don't have to be. That kind of stillness doesn't come from

00:06:40.060 --> 00:06:47.660
quiet surroundings. It comes from confidence in who reigns. Psalm 46 ends by repeating something

00:06:47.880 --> 00:06:53.460
it's been saying all along. The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our fortress.

00:06:54.580 --> 00:07:01.120
That's the foundation, not calm circumstances, not stable nations, not personal strength,

00:07:01.760 --> 00:07:03.440
but a God who reigns.

00:07:04.460 --> 00:07:09.180
So the next time you hear or see Psalm 4610 on a mug, in a song,

00:07:09.780 --> 00:07:13.420
or in a moment when everything feels like it's shaking, remember this.

00:07:14.140 --> 00:07:16.320
God isn't asking you to manufacture peace.

00:07:17.040 --> 00:07:19.640
He's inviting you to recognize reality.

00:07:20.380 --> 00:07:22.560
He is God, and that's enough.

00:07:24.960 --> 00:07:25.480
Let's pray.

00:07:52.780 --> 00:07:54.680
Everything ultimately rests in you.

00:07:56.040 --> 00:08:00.200
And for those listening right now who feel overwhelmed, anxious, or afraid,

00:08:00.820 --> 00:08:03.840
remind them, Lord, that you are their refuge and their strength,

00:08:04.250 --> 00:08:05.980
a very present help in trouble.

00:08:07.440 --> 00:08:10.900
Help us to know, not just emotionally, but deeply and truly,

00:08:11.160 --> 00:08:15.040
that you are God and that you will be exalted in all the earth.

00:08:16.480 --> 00:08:17.100
We trust you.

00:08:17.800 --> 00:08:18.740
We submit to you.

00:08:19.620 --> 00:08:20.520
We praise you.

00:08:21.500 --> 00:08:24.000
In Jesus' name, amen.

00:08:31.740 --> 00:08:34.860
Before we go, just a quick word about value for value.

00:08:35.919 --> 00:08:38.860
Verses We Missed is part of Lifespringmedia.com,

00:08:39.080 --> 00:08:42.460
and everything we do here is made possible by the Lifespring family.

00:08:42.979 --> 00:08:45.660
Listeners who believe the shows here have value.

00:08:46.760 --> 00:08:49.259
So if today's episode helped you to take a breath

00:08:49.280 --> 00:08:51.560
or helped you see Scripture more clearly

00:08:52.340 --> 00:08:54.820
or simply reminded you who really is in control

00:08:55.340 --> 00:08:56.620
and you find value in that,

00:08:57.080 --> 00:08:58.900
then I invite you to return some value.

00:08:59.720 --> 00:09:02.040
That might look like prayer for the show or me.

00:09:02.580 --> 00:09:05.160
It might be sharing the episode with someone who needs it.

00:09:05.340 --> 00:09:08.260
Or, if you're able, it might mean financial support.

00:09:08.980 --> 00:09:10.640
The amount is completely up to you.

00:09:11.200 --> 00:09:12.500
Whatever value you received,

00:09:13.040 --> 00:09:15.120
assign a number to it and send it back.

00:09:15.860 --> 00:09:17.420
There's no pressure and no obligation.

00:09:18.120 --> 00:09:22.760
Just a simple invitation to participate in what God is doing through this work.

00:09:30.060 --> 00:09:32.620
I'll thank you, and I believe that God will bless you.

00:09:37.320 --> 00:09:40.600
The next time you hear the words, be still and know that I am God,

00:09:41.160 --> 00:09:43.240
don't just hear a call to quiet your heart.

00:09:44.140 --> 00:09:51.160
Hear the voice of the sovereign king speaking over chaos, declaring reality, and inviting you to trust him.

00:09:52.280 --> 00:09:53.900
This has been Verses We Missed.

00:09:54.320 --> 00:09:55.040
I'm Steve Webb.

00:09:55.660 --> 00:09:59.940
Until next time, be still and know that he is God.
