Now, we need to remember that the 00:01:50.220 --> 00:01:57.540 matters. The book of Zephaniah is not light reading. The prophet is speaking to Judah, 00:01:58.080 --> 00:02:05.520 to Israel, covenant people who had drifted far from the Lord, idolatry, spiritual complacency, 00:02:06.140 --> 00:02:13.260 corruption, pride. The day of the Lord is described in sobering language. Now, for Israel, this meant His renewed presence after discipline. 00:03:38.140 --> 00:03:44.560 God had not abandoned them. He had purified them. And now He dwelt in their midst again. 00:03:46.200 --> 00:03:49.780 For us as believers, we cannot help but think of something even greater. 00:03:50.640 --> 00:03:59.500 God with us. Emmanuel. Through Jesus of Nazareth, the Word made flesh, God literally dwelt among us. 00:03:59.940 --> 00:04:06.279 And now, through the Holy Spirit, He indwells His people. So, the God revealed in Zephaniah 00:04:06.720 --> 00:04:13.500 is a God who desires nearness. Okay, the next sentence. He is a mighty Savior. 00:04:14.230 --> 00:04:21.959 The language here carries the sense of a warrior. Strong, capable, victorious. This is not a 00:04:22.170 --> 00:04:30.759 hesitant rescuer. This is not a symbolic salvation. He is mighty to save. For Israel, that meant 00:04:30.780 --> 00:04:37.280 deliverance from enemies and restoration after exile. For us, the rescue is deeper still. 00:04:37.980 --> 00:04:45.320 We are not merely rescued from circumstances. We are rescued from sin, from condemnation, 00:04:45.920 --> 00:04:51.860 from separation from a holy God. Okay, the next sentence says, He will take delight in you with gladness. 00:05:14.260 --> 00:05:22.420 Now we step into something astonishing. God delights. He not merely forgives. He not merely 00:05:22.540 --> 00:05:31.940 tolerates. He delights. The word carries the idea of joy, pleasure, deep affection. Now remember who 00:05:31.940 --> 00:05:39.360 this is spoken to. A people who had failed. A people who had wandered. A people who had required 00:05:39.720 --> 00:05:46.960 discipline. But after restoration, God does not say, I suppose I'll allow you back. We don't claim this verse as if 00:08:33.820 --> 00:08:39.719 were originally written directly to the church, but we do see in it the unchanging nature of God. 00:08:40.539 --> 00:08:47.680 The God revealed here, the God who saves, delights, quiets, and sings, is the same God revealed in 00:08:47.840 --> 00:08:52.920 Jesus Christ. Through faith in Christ, we are brought into covenant relationship with Him, 00:08:53.880 --> 00:09:00.759 not by nationality, not by works, but by grace alone.
